Rolland Jasper Fenner


[b 22 July 1907 at Branch Co., MI; d 18 Mar. 1986 at Fremont, IN] On 9 Nov. 1934, Rolland m 1st Celia Marie Sanders [b 8 Sept. 1913; d 5 Oct. 1983 at Angola, IN], daughter of Archie Sanders and Bertha Shumway. Celia’s mother and Rolland’s stepmother were sisters. 

Rolland Jasper Fenner joined the Army when he was just sixteen years old, and he was stationed at Ft. Washington, MD, just outside of Washington, DC. While he was there, he became one of the President’s Troops and was in the Color Guard. When he was twenty years old, he completed his Army service and returned to Coldwater, MI, where he joined Company A. At Camp Grayling, he was picked as the best soldier in Michigan, but not as an officer. The following year, Capt. Wheeler made him an officer, and when he returned to Camp Grayling, he again became the Best Soldier in Michigan. His picture was in either the Detroit News or the Detroit Free Press, and he was sent at once to the Far East. He was there during the Manchurian Rebellion, and the burning of Shanghai in the 1930s. Rolland and Celia lived in Philadelphia, PA; East Gilead, MI; Coldwater, MI; Jackson, NM; El Paso, TX; Alamogordo, NM; Las Crusces, NM; Sturgis, MI; and Angola, IN. Rolland m 2nd Nina Rutka [b 1909 in Poland].

Children by Rolland and Celia:

  1. Kay Jean [b 4 May 1937] married twice.

  2. Sue Anne [b 17 June 1938; d Nov. 10, 1989] m Roger Schommer and lived in Wright, Wyoming.
