Dr. Henry Edgar Fenner, 90, of New Wilmington, died at Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care on Sunday, July 17, 2022, after an extended illness. He was the husband of Ruth Ann Elliot Fenner. Born in Olean, New York, on Oct. 11, 1932, Dr. Fenner was the son of Eldyn Lyon Fenner and Helen Myrick Fenner. After graduation from Shinglehouse (Pennsylvania) High School, Dr. Fenner earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1950. He went on to study at Temple Medical School. In June 1957, he married his college sweetheart, Ruth Ann Elliot. After graduating from Temple in 1958, Dr. Fenner completed his residency. He served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at the Bethesda (Maryland) Medical Hospital and the Newport (Rhode Island) Naval Station.

After living in Allentown and Williamsport, they moved to New Wilmington to begin a long and honored career as pathologist of New Castle’s St. Francis Hospital. Revered in his profession and his community, Dr. Fenner was a member of the Living Word Church, where he was known and loved as a pillar of the church and a mentor of many. He participated in overseas mission work and was active in men’s ministry. An avid gardener, scout leader, and a philanthropist, Dr. Fenner embodied all the qualities of a true humanitarian.

Dr. Fenner is survived by his wife, Ann, of New Wilmington; daughter, Rev. Dr. Carolyn Moss, and son-in-law, Howard Moss of Volant; son, Dr. Mark Fenner and daughter-in-law, Dr. Barbara Fenner of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; daughter-in-law, Rosalia Pace of New Wilmington; six grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and two sons, Thomas Edgar Fenner (1995) and Stephen Andrew Fenner (2020).

The family gathered for a funeral service on Monday, July 18, 2022, at the Smith Funeral Home, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington, with The Rev. Rob Cypher presiding. Interment followed at Fair Oaks Cemetery, New Wilmington. Memorial contributions may be made to Living Word Church, Victory Lane, New Wilmington. There will be a public memorial celebration of Dr. Fenner’s life and his son, Stephen Andrew Fenner, at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2022, at Living Word Church, 22 Victory Lane, New Wilmington. —New Castle News
