Ancestors of Captain Arthur Fenner

Thomas Fenner

British Library, Harley MS 1562, fol. 83v, showing Thomas, his son John, and grandson John.

Thomas Fenner was born ca. 1484, probably in or near Crawley, Sussex, son of John Fenner (or Thomas) and Elizabeth Wodye. He married Anne Shorter [ca. 1480–1541] in the 19th year of Henry VII (ca. 1504). In 1506–07 he was granted 110 acres of land in Ifield, Sussex. In 1507 in a case against William and Maud Changeton, he was issued 60 acres of land, 10 acres of meadow, 20 acres of pasture, 20 acres of wood, 6s. 8d. rent in Ifield. He died in May 1513, leaving a brief will (written 7 May 1513, in Latin) at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. His death at a young age is reflected in his father’s will, which was written a few weeks later, on 28 May 1513. Both wills were proved on the same day, 7 Sept. 1513. They both asked to be buried by the church of Saint John the Baptist in Crawley.

  1. John the Elder [b ca. 1506/7; d 1553] of Ifield, described as age 6 in his grandfather’s will (1513).

  2. John the Younger [b ca. 1508/9] described as age 4 in his grandfather’s will (1513).
