Sarah Fenner

 

[b 1732; d 17 Oct. 1770 in her 39th yr.] Sarah Fenner m Colonel John Waterman [b ca. 1729; d 19 Aug. 1812 in his 84th yr.] of Johnston, RI, son of Joseph Waterman, ca. 1749. Col. Waterman owned a tavern on the road to Warwick, seven miles from Providence. He was the first Justice of the Peace for Johnston, starting in May 1759. After Sarah’s death in 1770, Col. Waterman m 2nd Alice Fenner, Sarah’s sister, on 13 Jan. 1772, which was also her second marriage. John town auditor for the years ending June 1772 and 1774. In 1776, at the dawn of the Revolutionary War, the town records for Providence were confidentially stored in their home. He served as town moderator several times from 1767 to 1796, among other offices and duties.

  1. Waitstill [b 17 Dec. 1750; d 11 Jan. 1835 at Scituate, RI] m John Potter [b 31 Oct. 1747 at Scituate, RI; d 15 Feb. 1825 at Scituate] on 8 Sept. 1777, son of Fisher Potter and Mary Winsor. They had seven children: Sally, Waterman, Elizabeth, Mary, John, Wait, and Jeremiah.

  2. Amey [b 1754; d 25 Aug. 1838] m Arnold Fenner [b 1756; d 9 Aug. 1796 at Johnston, RI, killed by lightning], son of Richard Fenner [1718–1799] and Elizabeth Arnold. They had Lydia [b 27 Mar. 1782; d 12 Sept. 1810 at Greenville, RI] who m Thomas Waterman [1781–1848], Joseph W. [b 4 Nov. 1784], Sarah [b 12 Mar. 1790], and Arnold [b 21 Mar. 1794].

  3. Edward [b 1759 at Johnston, RI; d 18 June 1847 at Johnston, RI] m Lydia Fenner, daughter of William Fenner [1714–1779] and Christian Arnold.

  4. Elizabeth [b 1761; d 7 Dec. 1833] m 1st — Waterman, had had Stacy [b 22 Feb. 1791; d 15 June 1865]. She m 2nd Job Gorton [d Jan. 1804 at Norway, Herkimer Co., NY].

  5. Lydia [b ca. 1762; d 1 June 1808] m John Anthony Burton [b 7 June 1757 at Cranston, RI; d 3 Apr. 1831 at Cranston, RI] on 24 Oct 1779 at Johnston, RI, son of Benjamin Burton and Alice Westcott. Had Esther, Betsey, Narcissa, Alice, Joseph, James, and Caroline.

  6. Sarah [b 1763; d 31 Aug. 1829 at Providence, RI] m George Manchester [b ca. 1763; d 24 Nov. 1825 at Johnston, RI]. They had George, Lydia, and Hannah.
